1.Illumination (brightness) levels of swimming pools lighting in different areas
The first step in the design of swimming pool lighting is to study the illumination level requirements.
As can be seen from the above table, the lighting requirements for the recreational swimming pool are approximately.500 Lux, while the brightness standards for competing aquatic centers are increased to 1,000 to 1,200 Lux. Professional swimming pools require high lumens because bright lights provide a better environment for broadcasting and taking photos.This also means that swimming pool lighting is more expensive, as we need to install more illuminators in the ceiling to provide adequate lighting.
In addition to the pool area, we also need to maintain sufficient brightness for the audience.Once again, according to IES, the lux level in the pool spectator area is about 150 lux. This is good enough for the audience to read the text in their seats.In addition, lower illumination values were observed in other areas such as locker rooms, aisles and chemical warehouses.This lux level of illumination can stimulate swimmers or staff.

2.How many floodlights do I need to light up the pool?
After looking at lux levels of lighting, we may still not know how many lights or lighting power we need.Take an Olympic-sized swimming pool for example.Since the size of the swimming pool is 50 x 25 = 1,250 square meters, we need 1,250 square meters x 1000 lux = 1,250,000 lumens to light up the 9 lanes.Since our LED lights have a lighting efficiency of about 140 lumens per watt, the estimated power of pool lighting = 1,250/140 = 8,930 watts.But that’s just the theory.We will need to provide additional power for lighting in the auditorium and the area around the swimming pool.Sometimes we need to increase the power of the lights by 30 to 50 per cent to meet the lighting requirements of IES swimming pools.

How to change the swimming pool lighting?
Sometimes we want to replace the metal halide, mercury vapor or halogen floodlights in the swimming pool.Metal halide lamps have many limitations, such as short service life and long warm-up time.If you are using a metal halide lamp, it will take about 5 to 15 minutes to reach maximum brightness.But that’s not the case with LED.After turning on the lights, your swimming pool will immediately reach its maximum brightness.
To replace pool lights, one of the main considerations is equivalent power for metal halides or your existing lighting equipment.For example, our 100-watt LED lamp can replace 400W metal halides, while our 400W LED is equivalent to 1000W MH.By using new lighting with similar lumens and lux outputs, the swimming pool or spectator seats are not too bright or too dark.In addition, the reduction in electricity consumption has saved the swimming pool’s electricity bill.
Another incentive to convert swimming pool lighting to LEDS is that we can save up to 75% of our energy.Due to our LED has a high luminous efficiency of 130~150 lm/W.At the same power consumption, LED emit brighter light than metal halides, halogens or other conventional lighting solutions.

3.Location of swimming pool lighting (how to install)
How should we place the ceiling lighting for the water sports centre?Should the light face up or down?Floodlights should not be placed directly over the swimming pool water.This is because direct lighting creates a strong glare that affects the line of sight of swimmers and spectators.Especially for backstroke swimmers, the glaring lights above the pool can irritate them.To solve this problem, we can install lighting next to the swimming pool and use tilting lighting to illuminate the pool.In this case, the glare caused by water reflection will be reduced.
Another way to light up a swimming pool is to use secondary reflections.This means that the light points to the ceiling and then USES reflected light to illuminate the swimming pool.This is one of the best methods, because the ceiling ACTS as a larger diffuser, so the lighting is more uniform.However, because the ceiling absorbs some of the light, it consumes more energy, so we will need extra power and LED lumens.
4.The color of swimming pool lighting is mild CRI
The color of the lights inside the swimming pool is really important and the following table summarizes the recommended color temperatures for different situations.

6.Special precautions for swimming pool lighting
A.Waterproof design
All lighting in the swimming pool shall be waterproof.The relative humidity in the swimming pool stadium is higher because of the evaporation of the pool water.If lamps are not waterproof, they can easily go out and cause electrical leakage.
B.The lamp body material
Our LED lamps are made of anti – corrosion aluminium alloy lamps.The lens is made of polycarbonate or glass, not acrylic, because polycarbonate is more durable and the glass won’t turn yellow from environmental damage for 50 years.

C.The patch vs COB
