Many stadiums use high intensity discharge lamp (HID) lighting. The downside of these lights is the length of time it takes to turn them on and achieve optimum efficiency. Metal halide stadium lights take a long time to warm up
Metal halide (MH) lighting systems are still common in many stadiums. Metal halide lamps cannot achieve the desired light output in just a few minutes. They can take up to 5-20 minutes to reach 90% of their full brightness.
When the lights were first turned on, viewers usually see a dim glow. It takes up to 15 minutes to warm up, during which time the lights gradually brighten. The lamp does not work properly until it finally reaches the correct temperature.

Keep heating it, and eventually the sodium will turn into vapor, because light is emitted at full power.
